Marketing A Small Business Online Using Free Methods – Case Study Part 1

Because of the hurricanes in Haiti many people were killed and 1000′s left homeless. World Harvest Missions Outreach brings medical aid to the remote villages of Haiti and rescues homeless, sick, abandoned and dying children in their Haiti Orphanage, New Life Childrens Home.

On September 30, 2008 Skunkworks Marketing Solutions built, added content and began a marketing campaign using totally free methods. Even the header came from World Harvest Missions Outreach letterhead.

Skunkworks Marketing Solutions donated this work to World Harvest Missions Outreach to build an automated stream of donations for the Haiti Orphanage and the Haiti relief effort.

Skunkworks Marketing Solutions also felt this was a perfect opportunity with the current economic and financial state of affairs to publish a case study using the simple, Free techniques available to anyone that wants to start a website for personal or business reasons and have it show up on the first page of Google.

The Process:

The first task was to purchase the domain name.

We used a combination of WordPress and Coppermine for World Harvest Missions Outreach.

There are many free themes to choose from and with minimal html knowledge many of these can be easily modified to fit your particular needs.

A key step for ranking is content. Now is time to add your content. This can be written, images or videos. We used a combination of all of these from exclusive sources plus we added RSS feed to have the Haiti latest news constantly updated.

To brand them and add credibility to their off-line marketing Skunkworks targeted the keywords “World Harvest Missions Outreach” and the founder/director “Miriam Frederick”. There are also other non-profit organizations that use that name so we chose to dominate the first page of Google quickly before moving on to keywords for traffic.

Skunkworks used “Haiti Latest News”, “Haiti Recent News” and “Christian Mission Trip to Haiti” as the next group of keywords to target for organic search engine traffic. These keywords with only a couple of press releases are on page 2 of Google search results and have only been targeted for a couple of weeks.

Imagine the results with some paid strategies.

Alexa ranking began at 20,422,407 out of millions of websites on 9-30-2008 with just a couple of posts. The next couple of weeks were spent adding content. The alexa ranking was checked again on 10-11-2008 with about 73% of the current content and was 1,891,016 and the current ranking as of 11-28-2008 is 874,686.

Skunkworks Marketing Solutions then wrote 4 press releases that were submitted totally Free to prlog.com to drive traffic and gain backlinks.

Skunkworks then moved focus to the “New Life Childrens Home” website which was a much bigger task because of the competition on that particular name and is the second part of this case study.

We will continue to submit a press release every couple of weeks targeting different keywords and updating the website with new content.

Now comes the testing and tweaking part to optimize the traffic and donations.
